My Favorite Art Books: The Power of Loomis' "Creative Illustration" and Ray Smith's "Perspective Drawing" Gombrich's "The Story of Art".

My two MUST READ art books. These two books have significantly impacted my artistic journey:

  • Loomis' "Creative Illustration" (1947)

  • Ray Smith's "Perspective Drawing"

These books are not only excellent resources for artists but also provide a glimpse into the world of fine art and its historical significance.

Loomis' "Creative Illustration": A Timeless Classic

I have read this book multiple times. To me, the book offers valuable insights into illustration, creativity, and storytelling, making it an essential resource for FINE ARTIST.

This book provides comfort knowing that even renowned illustrators like Clyde Aspevig, Howard Turpning, and Richard Schmidt were once beginners themselves.

The book's significance extends beyond its content; it also showcases Loomis' unique approach to illustrating. He emphasizes the importance of understanding the technical aspects of art while still allowing for creative expression. This balance between technique and creativity is a hallmark of great artistic work.

Ray Smith's A Masterclass in Perspective

My other favorite is Ray Smith's "Perspective Drawing", which is an outstanding book on perspective. The book provides a clear and concise explanation of the principles of perspective, making it accessible to artists of all skill levels. This one is not overly complicated and offers a depth of knowledge that is unmatched by other resources.

One of the most interesting aspects of this book is its historical context. Smith's work highlights the evolution of artistic techniques over time, from ancient civilizations to modern-day masters. This perspective (no pun intended) provides artists with a broader understanding of their craft and the world of fine art.

A Shared Passion: The Importance of Art History

I cannot stress enough the importance of understanding art history and its relevance to contemporary art. This knowledge of past artistic movements can inform and inspire future work. Gombrich- The Story of Art, in particular, demonstrates this connection by tracing the development of art from ancient times to modern-day techniques in the form of a novel. A must-read for all artists of all levels.

Each day, from the 40 years of teaching, my classes on art history have been shaped by both Loomis', Smith's and Gombrich's work, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of artistic principles and historical context.

Conclusion: Navigating the World of Fine Art

These resources offer not only technical expertise but also a deeper understanding of artistic history and its relevance to contemporary practice.

Whether you're an artist looking to refine your skills or an art enthusiast seeking to deepen your knowledge, these books are essential reading. They provide a foundation for understanding the principles of art, its historical context, and the creative process itself.

By embracing both technical expertise and artistic history, artists can create work that is informed by the past while pushing the boundaries of innovation.
