Overcoming the Fears and Problems of Visiting an Art Store

What are the problems and fears with going to an art store? The temptation to buy things you just don’t need is a common issue. I cannot tell you how many supplies I have in my house that, in the last 20 years, I’ve still haven’t used.

  • The Temptation of Unnecessary Purchases: This situation reminds me of being told not to go to a grocery store when you’re hungry because then you leave with snacks and not real food. PS: anything in a bag is not real food.

  • The Importance of Having a Plan: I think it would be better suited to have a plan. And I don’t mean just shopping but to say this painting or drawing I’m going to do, I’m going to learn one thing. How do I do that one thing in the drawing or the painting and then I go to the store and only get that supply?

The Challenge of Foundational Drawing or Painting

The reason I say that is because as you get into your foundational drawing or foundational painting and you have difficulty doing it or trouble doing it, the tendency is to put away the supplies you just purchased and do something else.

It’s my desire for you to succeed.

And sometimes one of the hardest things is to learn to work longer and harder on what you’re working on, to pause and find more information on it, and to deal with what’s in front of you instead of running. For some people, running is a possible habit of a lifetime. Now it’s time for you to do art, but do not think you haven’t taken your habit or reaction when things get difficult and run.

So the next time you’re in the art class and you hear you need some supplies, what if you only bought those supplies and walked out with just those supplies?

There are certain stores that I shop at frequently, and when I get to the checkout counter, I have to walk the gauntlet where all the candy and chips are. I’m so proud of myself when I don’t buy something, and then there are those other times when I leave with a bag of chips.

I wonder if I find myself going to Home Depot just to get a KitKat or a small pack of Pringles when I don’t need anything at Home Depot.
