Protecting Your Brushes from Pests: A Brush Owner's Worst Nightmare

As artists, we invest a lot in our materials and tools. Losing an expensive brush to pests can be a huge blow to our creative psyche. I found out the hard way.

My Horror Story

I once had a bug (yes, just one!) eat a very expensive handmade brush signed by a famous artist. The brush was given to me as a gift from my friend, who has work in major museums worldwide. I cherished the brush not only because of its sentimental value but also because it was a one-of-a-kind, handmade tool.

The Bug's Lunch

I left the brush on the table for just one night, and when I woke up the next morning, it had been eaten! Half of the hairs were missing, and there was no doubt that a bug had done its damage. I no longer have the brush (sadly), but I wish I could show you what it looked like before the incident.

Protecting Your Brushes

To avoid a similar fate, I now store all my brushes in sealant packages or containers with cedar blocks to keep pests at bay. This is especially crucial for expensive brushes made from natural animal hair, which can be easily damaged by bugs. Even nylon brushes aren't entirely safe, as some bugs can still chew through them.

My Go-To Solution

I use a combination of Tupperware containers and sealant packages to protect my brushes. The larger brushes go in the container with cedar blocks, while smaller ones are stored in individual bags within the sealant package. I've even invested in a large Tupperware box that holds six slats, each sealed and locked.

Tips from an Experienced Artist

Here are some additional tips to help you protect your brushes:

  • Use high-quality brushes made from durable materials.

  • Store your brushes in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

  • Avoid storing expensive brushes near areas where bugs tend to congregate (e.g., near food or trash).

  • Consider investing in a brush holder with individual compartments to keep each brush separate.

Conclusion

Protecting your brushes from pests is an essential part of maintaining your art supplies. By taking the necessary precautions, you can enjoy using your brushes for years to come without worrying about them being destroyed by unwanted critters. Happy creating!
