Spiral vs. Bound: Which Sketchbook Wins the Art Class Showdown? And Reinforce Your Spiral Bindings with Fishing Line!

Choosing the right sketchbook can feel overwhelming, especially for budding artists just starting their journey or seasoned teachers looking for classroom-ready options. Recently, I stumbled upon a fascinating conversation about sketchbooks that really got me thinking!

Two voices emerged: one being an experienced art teacher and the other from the lens of someone new to selecting art supplies.

Let's dive into the two perspectives:

The Expert's Take | Spiral Bound

As the art teacher, clearly well-versed in the trials and tribulations of classroom use, I would strongly advocate for spiral bound sketchbooks.

  • “Spiral bound is best for classes because they are durable!”

  • “The pages lay flat so it’s easier to draw.”

The spiral bindings make it possible to keep the sketchbook open without fear of damaging the book or the work inside.

Clever trick: Reinforcing spiral bindings with fishing line for extra longevity. Brilliant!

As a Newbie to the Art Store | Sketchpad

when you get the sketchbook, I might express some understandable hesitation about potentially damaging my work.

  • “I’m worried about tearing the pages if I use them too much.”

  • I might be particularly concerned about how the bound sketchbooks could fall apart and how they might be more prone to damage.

This is a valid concern! While spiral bound sketchbooks are generally more durable, any sketchbook can suffer from wear and tear with heavy use. And the right paper weight can also be important for preventing tear-outs.

Don't Forget About Size

Get a classic sketchbook size! Too small, and you might find yourself cramped. Too large, and it becomes unwieldy to transport and use. 9x12 strikes a great balance.

  • “9x12 inches is a good size for classes - it’s portable but big enough to work on.”

The Verdict: We Like Both for Different Reasons

While both types of sketchbooks have their merits, for classroom use, spiral bound sketchbooks seem to be the clear winner. They offer durability, flat pages, and portability – all essential qualities for navigating the dynamic world of an art class.

Of course, personal preference always plays a role! Ultimately, the best sketchbook is the one that inspires you to create your masterpiece.
