Strathmore 300 Series Paper: The Artist's Best Friend for Sketching and Experimentation

Looking for the right paper ... we have a tip and another helpful video about choosing the right paper for your artistic journey. I often focus on Strathmore's 300 series paper, it's a favorite among artists including myself.

The 300 Series: A Happy Medium

When you walk into an art supply store, you'll likely see Strathmore papers in three main series: 300, 400, and 500. Each offers a different level of tooth (the texture of the paper), brightness, and erase-ability.

The 300 series strikes a beautiful balance between those factors. It's forgiving, meaning it's great for sketching and experimentation because:

  • It erases easily:  Don't be afraid to make mistakes! The 300 series allows you to lift charcoal with ease, letting you refine your lines and explore different ways to make a mark.

  • It's versatile:  Whether you're working with charcoal pencils, vine charcoal, or powdered charcoal the 300 series handles it all.

The Trade-Off: Brightness vs. Erasability

While the 300 series excels at erasing, it's not as bright white as the 400 series. This means your artwork might lack some of that vibrant contrast. The 400 series paper is fantastic for detailed work and achieving a polished look, but it doesn't erase as well.

When to Choose Each Series

  • 300 Series:  Perfect for sketching, practicing techniques, working quickly in class settings, or when you need the freedom to experiment without worrying about mistakes.

  • 400 Series:  Ideal for studio work where precision and contrast are important. Save this paper for pieces you want to refine carefully.

  • 500 Series:  A museum-quality paper with minimal acidity, perfect for archival artwork that will last a lifetime.

Back to the 300 Series!

In the video above, I'm using the Strathmore 300 series paper to demonstrate how versatile it is. Take a peek at what I can do with charcoal and a kneaded eraser – I can create soft, blended lines and precise details, all on this forgiving surface.

So next time you're choosing paper, remember the 300 series. It's a fantastic option for artists who value flexibility and ease of use. Happy creating!
