Drawing DIY Hack: Why I Prefer MDF Over Traditional Drawing Boards

As an artist, I've had my fair share of drawing boards. Some have been decent, but most have left me feeling frustrated and uninspired. That's why I'm excited to share with you my discovery of medium-density fiberboard (MDF) as the perfect alternative to traditional drawing boards.

The Problem with Traditional Drawing Boards

Traditional drawing boards are often made from particleboard, which is notorious for releasing formaldehyde fumes. Not only is this toxic, but it's also a major turn-off for artists who prioritize their health and well-being. I've tried various drawing boards in the past, but none have impressed me.

The Benefits of MDF

MDF, on the other hand, offers several benefits that make it an ideal choice for artists like myself:

  1. No Formaldehyde : MDF is made from wood fibers that are pressed together without using formaldehyde, making it a much healthier and safer option.

  2. Lighter Weight : Unlike traditional particleboard boards, MDF is lighter in weight, which makes it easier to handle and less likely to cause fatigue.

  3. Customizable Size : I can easily cut my MDF boards to the exact size I need, which is essential for working with custom-sized papers like rag paper.

My Solution: Home Depot and Lowe's

So, where do you buy these amazing products? Both Home Depot and Lowe's offer a wide range of MDF sheets that can be easily cut to size. This means I can get my hands on high-quality materials without breaking the bank or sacrificing quality.

The Perfect Clip

When it comes to clips, I've found that medium to small-sized office clips is perfect for protecting my paper without causing damage. These clips are gentle on my papers and won't ruin them with their aggressive grips.

Tips and Tricks

Here are a few tips and tricks I'd like to share:

  • Always cut your MDF boards to the size you need, rather than relying on pre-made drawing board sizes.

  • Use three clips – two on top and one on the side – to keep your artwork secure and prevent movement.

  • Leave your drawing in its own board and cover it with a protective sheet when not in use.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I'm thrilled to have discovered MDF as my new go-to material for drawing boards. Its benefits, from no formaldehyde to customizable size, make it an ideal choice for artists who care about their health and well-being. If you're looking for a healthier, more sustainable option, consider giving MDF a try!
